Understand
Visalia is located in the agricultural valley of San Joaquin. It is approximately 200 miles from San Francisco, 200 miles from Los Angeles and 40 miles from Fresno. The city is the seat of Tulare County.
The region around Visalia was the place of establishment for the American tribes Yokut and Mono. The arrival of the first Europeans is not exactly known, the first to report the region was Pedro Fages in 1722. When California became a state in 1850, Tulare County did not exist yet. Tulare County was part of the huge county of Mariposa. In 1852, pioneers settled in the area, then called Four Creeks. The region takes its name from the many streams and rivers in the watershed of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. All the waters constituted a vast marshy area with an oak forest. The group of settlers asks the state legislature for county status. Tulare County was established in July 1852.
Visalia's rapid growth can be attributed in part to the gold rush along the Kern River. Many transit miners settled in Visalia when gold wasn't there.
